    Violence in Iraq Leaves 12 000 Dead in 2014, UN Reports

    United Nations, The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) reported that violence in Iraq has left around 12 thousand people dead and 22 thousand injured, mostly civilians.

    According to the report, some 1,232 people were killed by violence in November. "Iraqis continue to be daily subjected to the unspeakable horrors of killing, maiming, reign of terror, displacement, extreme forms of intolerance and poverty", said the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov.

     

    Mladenov also called on IIraq's political, religious and social leaders to rise above their differences and work to consolidate the democratic process.

     

    The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) reported that the number of civilians killed and wounded was around three times the size of the number of Iraqi Security Forces members, with civilians accounting for at least 936 of deaths and no fewer than 1,826 of those injured.


    The worst affected Governorate was Baghdad, which has seen an increase in violence over the last months with the offensive carried out by the Islamic State, Prensa Latina News Agency reports said. (KH)
