    Sri Lankan Embassy in Stockholm celebrates 69th Anniversary of the Independence

    Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm celebrated the 69th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka on 4th February at the Embassy premises with the presence of the Sri Lankan community living in Sweden.

    Ambassador Mrs. Damayanthie Rajapakse hoisted the National Flag followed by playing the National Anthem of Sri Lanka in both official languages, Sinhala andTamil and the National Anthem of Sweden.  Thereafter, observed two minutes silence in honour of all national heroes who had sacrificed their lives on behalf of our motherland.  Religious observances were conducted by the Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic clergy bestowing blessings upon Sri Lanka and its people for unity and peace to prevail in the country.

     

    The National Day Message of the President of Sri Lanka was read out in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages by the Ambassador and members of the staff.

     

    Ambassador while addressing the gathering, highlighted that the Government of Sri Lanka after ending two decades of conflict is now working towards achieving reconciliation and national integration and staying focused on economic progress of the country.

     

    The event for the Diplomatic and business community was held on 6th February at the Embassy premises with the presence of a large gathering of Diplomatic community, business community and officials representing the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden.

     

    At this event, Ambassador Damayanthie Rajapakse made a brief speech outlining the current political situation in the country and emphasized on the visit made by Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka to Sweden in January 2017 and the visit made by Ms. Margot Wallström, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden to Sri Lanka in April 2016 as important mile stones in the Diplomatic Relations between Sri Lanka and Sweden.

     

    At both the events, guests partook of a traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.  Sri Lanka tea was served at the venue while the guests were given the opportunity to witness a glimpse of Sri Lanka using video clips displayed at the venue, creating a Sri Lankan ambience at the Embassy premises.
