“It is time we bring in new technologies to this sector. Together with our Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, we are planning to introduce new tech to Sri Lankan crafts sector” announced Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on 17 November.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was addressing the inauguration event of Shilpa Abhimani–2016 Presidential Awards and Handicrafts Exhibition by the National Crafts Council (NCC) of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce at BMICH on 17 November. The high level crafts and arts expo by the NCC is aimed at uplifting the quality of Sri Lanka’s craftsmen and their produce. Taking part at this year’s event –along with 100 Lankan exhibitors are 30 visiting craftsmen from SAARC countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. Joining the inauguration event were Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister of Primary Industries Daya Gamage, State Minister of Industry and Commerce Champkia Premadasa and NCC Chairperson Heshani Bogollagama among others as well as some members of the diplomatic community in Colombo.
“Not every Sri Lankan completes their higher education in full and many of them want to take up other avenues of skilled livelihood such as arts and crafts. We need to provide a permanent income to present and future Sri Lankan craftsmen. We want to modernise this sector as well. It is time we bring in new technologies to this sector. Together with our Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, we are planning to introduce new tech to Sri Lankan crafts sector” said Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, and added: “As they are SMEs, we also plan to increase funding to them through budgeted SME funds. Usually a traditional sector such as this is placed under the Ministry of Rural Industries but due to the strong leadership of Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, we have placed this sector and the National Crafts Council under his Ministry of Industry and Commerce. In fact, even now we see many such traditional industries in his electorate.”
Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen joined Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s call to bring hi tech to this historic sector. “Crafts and designs are very competitive and increasingly market driven. Therefore it is important for our craftsmen to be up to date in their work. For example we can introduce our promising and award winning craftsmen to International Trade Fairs such as the International Trade Fair for Crafts and Artists held annually in Frankfurt,Germany. Technology is increasingly becoming part of global designs and crafts. I am not just talking about computerization, laptops and smart phones here. I am talking about such technologies as 3D printing and laser operated design setups for us to make the craftsmen up to date and take them to global design and delivery levels. With the strong reform vision of the Unity Government of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe I have no doubts that this can become a reality” said Minister Bathiudeen and stressed the sector’s ability support the government’s one million employment program. “Some see the crafts sector as a low employment capacity sector without many prospects. However this is far from the reality. In fact, projects by my Ministry and NCC have the capacity to support the one million jobs program of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe. I am pleased to say this year alone the Crafts Council created 1000 self-employment opportunities for Lankan craftsmen. Next year we are planning to increase this by three-fold.”
The organisers expect more than 30000 participants to the Shilpa Abhimani show that concludes on 20 November at BMICH.
