    Maldivian Vice President's arrest was to protect integrity of the investigation

    Maldivian Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon said that the arrest of Maldivian Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor was an important step to secure the integrity of the investigations pertaining to the alleged assassination attempt of the Maldivian President, Abdulla Yameen on September 28.

    "No charges have been leveled against the Vice President so far," she said.

     

    Maldivian Foreign Minister, Dunya Maumoon was speaking at a media briefing convened in Colombo yesterday to reveal the progress of the investiations.

     

    An impartial and transparent investigation is currently on by the Maldives government to determine the motive and the perpetrators of the explosion. Foreign investigation teams such as the FBI, Saudi Arabian police and a special investigation team from Sri Lanka have been called for forensic and expert assistance to conduct a transparent investigation, she said.

     

    It is further evident to the investigation team that there is reliable information to suggest that efforts (were) made by suspected elements within Maldivian security services to tamper or destroy evidence related to the ongoing investigation. In this regard several arrests have been made by the Maldives Police for further interrogation.
