Athletics
Sri Lanka had a blessed day in track and field, winning four medals in the morning session. Lakshika Suganthi produced her best performance to win the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles clocking 13.68 seconds. Iresha Rajasinghe finished third with a timing of 14.18s to claim the bronze medal finishing behind silver medallist Aparna Roy of India (14.13s).Roshan Dhammika won a bronze with a timing of 14.42s in the men’s 100m hurdles. The gold went to Pakistan’s Mohammed Naeem (14.30s) and silver to Surendar J of India (14.37s).The 400m men’s and women’s gold medal went to Sri Lanka as Aruna Darshana clocked 46.69 and Lakmal Priyantha 46.79 respectively.
Dilshi Kumarasinghe won the gold in the women’s 400m clocking 53.40 seconds.Hashini Prabodha won the gold medal in the women’s Triple jump event with a leap of 13.26 metres while Vidusha Lakshani (12.25) clinched the silver.In the Men’s Triple jump, Safreen Ahamed leap of 15.95m won him the bronze medal behind the Indian duo Karthik Unnakri (16.47m) and Mohammed Salahu (16.16m).
Wushu
Sri Lanka Wushu produced their second gold medal when M.L. Gunasekara won the women’s Taijijian All-Rounder event. They also added one silver and two bronze medals.
Weight Lifting
Dilanka Isuru won the gold medal in the 55kg category held in Pokara. Palangasinghe (61kg) and Hansini Gomaz (49kg) won the silver medal.
Swimming
Mathew Abeysinghe dominated swimming which started yesterday and won three gold medals, winning both the men’s 200m Freestyle (1:48.92) and the 100m Butterfly (53.65) events. Apart from Abeysinghe’s performances, Kiran Jasinghe (2:20.68), Ramudi Samarakoon (2:44.71) and Aqilah Gaffoor (1:04.85) managed win bronze medals while the women’s 4x100m Freestyle relay team (4:00.08) swam their hearts out to clinch the silver medal.
Tennis
Lankan ladies ended up with silver at Satabado Stadum. In their individual matches Anika Senivirathne and Anjelica Wijesurya lost their matches. In the women’s doubles game Alana Seneviratne and Ruchika Wijesuriya also lost their game but their previous performances were sufficient to end up as the second best.
Cricket
Kamindu Mendis’ unbeaten century helped Sri Lanka register an easy win over Maldives and advance to the finals to battle for the gold medal spot.Sri Lanka batted first and posed 194 runs in 20 overs. Maldives scored only 94 runs in 20 overs. Ashitha Fernando, Kavishka Anjula and Nishan Piries claimed two wickets each.
Football
Sri Lanka men’s team was beaten by Bangladesh 1-0. Sri Lanka will face Bhutan on December 7 in a crucial semifinal clash.
Nepali shooters borrow ammunition
Nepali shooters were forced to borrow ammunition from their opponents after their National Sports Council failed to import their equipment on time.“We had two options: Ask for help from players of other countries or withdraw from the competition,” said a shooter. The Nepali shooters tried their luck by borrowing ammunition and made a graceful exit from the tournament.
According to a Nepal Shooting Association official, the women’s team missed the 10m Air Rifle medal by less than three points and Sushmita Nepal could not advance to the final round by 0.5 points.“It is not done. The situation could have been different,” the official added. “It was a great opportunity for Nepali shooters as they were competing at home. It is a shame that they were ill-equipped for the tournament,” he added.
