Sarangi Silva won the gold medal in the long jump event with a leap of 6.38 metres while Anjani Pulawansha, completed Sri Lanka’s 1-2 finish with a fine 6.11m leap to claim the silver, improving on her personal best distance by 2cm.Golden girl Sarangi who wasn’t even on the starting list for the event but was replaced at the latter stage when Vidusha Lakshani opted out in order to focus on her pet event, the triple jump.
Apart from them Kumar Shanmugeshwaran won a silver in the men’s 10,000m clocking 3:49.20. The gold was won by Suresh Kumar of India in 3:33.61 seconds. The bronze went to Adhikari who clocked 3:50.06.Viroj Suranjaya also won a won silver for Sri Lanka in the men’s 200m clocking 21.19 seconds. The gold medal went to Uzair Rehman of Pakistan (21.15s). Saaid Hassan, who clinched Maldives’ first ever South Asian Games Gold in the 100m on Tuesday, finished in third place with a timing of 21.22secs.
In the women’s 200m event Sri Lanka finished in fourth and fifth places. Shermila Jan ran a personal best of 24.37s and was placed fourth and Amasha de Silva who replaced Nadeesha Ramanayake who was taken ill and hospitalized was placed fifth with a time of 24.54secs.Late entry Ishara Madurangi took the bronze medal in the Discus Throw with a distance of 41.29m. The gold and silver went to Indians Navjeet Kaurdh (49.85m) and Suravi Biswas (47.31m) respectively.
Wushu
Sri Lanka’s Tharindu Namal won the gold in the men’s Taolu Taiji Jian event. The silver went to Gyandash Singh of India and the bronze to Nepal’s Hari Prasad. Meanwhile P.H.Wathsala won the silver in the same event in the women category.
Cricket
Sri Lanka women cricketers registered a massive 249-run win over Maldives in the group match played at Pokhara Rangasala, Stadium. Sri Lanka batted first and posted 279/2 runs in 20 overs. Harshitha Madhavi (106) and Sathya Sandeepani (96) batted brilliantly to help secure the victory. Maldives was dismissed for 30 with Janadi Anali taking three wickets and Sathya Sandeepani two wickets.
Sri Lanka men’s team beat Bhutan by 173 runs. Sri Lanka batted first and scored a massive 248/4 in 20 overs. Pathum Nissanka (76) and Nishan Madushka (65) made useful contributions. In reply Bhutan was shot out for 75 with Sachindu Colombage and Jehan Daniel picking up two wickets each.
Karate
Sri Lanka added two more bronze to their tally in the female team Kumute and 68kg plus which was won by B. Kulatunge.
Kho-Kho
Sri Lanka failed to win a single match in Kho-kho losing to Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives in the first round.
Table Tennis
Three bronze medals were won by the table tennis team. Chameera Ginige and Krishan won the men’s doubles, Udaya Ranasinghe and Ishara Madurangi the mixed doubles and Ishara Madurangi and Hansani Piumila the women’s doubles.
Football
Sri Lanka men drew one-all against Nepal at the Dasarath Rangasala Stadium. Meanwhile the women’s team lost all their group matches to Bangladesh and Nepal by 1-0 margins each.
Football players assaulted
Sri Lankan football players were assaulted by the Nepalese spectators in front of the Nepal Police. Niresh Sundarajan and Aman Faizer had their accreditation cards snatched away by spectators who got away. Head coach Nizam Pakeer Ali said that football was an emotional game and that Nepal desperately wanted to win in front of their home crowd. Both teams played under pressure he said.
According to the head coach he will make a complaint regarding the assault to the organizing committee.
Four athletes hospitalized
Amandi Bandara (table tennis), Nadeesha Ramanayake (400m, 200m, 4x400m), M.U. Kumara (10,000m) and women’s football player Gayathri were admitted to a local hospital in Kathmandu on Tuesday, as she is suffering from fever which turned out to be dengue (low platelet count). Several other athletes who resided at the Sugathadasa Sports hostel suffered from this viral fever before coming to Nepal.
