    An Australian Cricket Team Visits Jaffna after 42 Years

    Jaffna Combined School Team (JCST), in a T 20 match played on Friday (04) trounced the visiting Yarra Valley Cricket Association Team (YVCAT) of Australia. The friendly match organized by Security Force Jaffna in collaboration with Foundation of Goodness was played at Jaffna Central College ground with participation of Chief of Staff Sri Lanka Army Major General Prasad Samarasinghe as chief guest.

    Having won the toss, JCST captain Alan Raj decided to bat first and scored 183 for loss of 4 wickets. Their score included 4 sixes. However, YVCAT captained by Tyson Smith could score only 53 runs for 10 wickets in 13 overs. JCST comprised players from Jaffna Central College, Jaffna Hindu College, St. John's College, St. Patrick's College, Point Pedro Hartley College and Chunnakam Skanthavarodai College.

     

    R. Kajanan of Jaffna Hindu College, K. Kadolian of Skanthavarodai College and Lochyi Sinnett of YVCAT were awarded respectively as best batsman, best bawler and all rounder.

     

    Winners and runners up received trophies, medals and valuable gifts from Commander Security Force Jaffna Major General Udaya Perera and distinguished guests during the award ceremony.

     

    The event recollected cherished memories of old Jaffna cricket fans of the friendly match played between an Australian school team and a Jaffna combined school team in 1972 in the same ground. The Aussie team was captained by Allan Border who later became a popular international cricket star and Jaffna school team was captained by Sooriyakumar of Jaffna Hindu College. A member of the Jaffna school team Mr. Sanmugam Thayalan present Director of Education (Sports) Jaffna was present to witness this historic match played after ushering peace to the country.

     

    Mr. Kusil Gunasekara, Chairman of Foundation of Goodness coordinated and sponsored the YVCAT in Sri Lanka. Veteran commentator Mr. Premasara Epasinghe who had been invited as an honoured guest extended his assistance as a commentator as usual. Mr. P. Murugavel and Mr. N. Sivarajah of Jaffna Cricket Umpires' Association umpired the match.

     

    Religious dignitaries, Government Agent Jaffna Mr. S. Arumainayagam, Mayoress Jafna Mrs. Y. Pathgunarasa, Principal of Jaffna Central College Mr. S.K. Elilventhan, YVCAT coach Mr. David Peel and Manager Print Vitt and JACT coach Mr. Laksitha Herath were also in the audience. SDF/mod (HC/SI)
