    January 11, 2016

Sri Lanka has declared the week from the 25th to the 30th January as the National Sports and Physical Fitness Week with a view to control Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which are the leading cause of death in Sri Lanka.

The programme is being initiated on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena to introduce healthy living through sports and physical training as well as to popularize sports among the people so as to create a sports culture within the country.

The President's Secretary has released a special circular informing all Ministries and Departments to adhere to relevant activities during the Sports and Physical Fitness week. Accordingly sports and physical fitness programmes will be conducted among the staff of all government institutions.

Also parallel to the Sports and Physical Fitness Promotion day which falls on January 30, islandwide programmes on sports and physical fitness as well as sports events on divisional secretariat levels will be held.

In addition to the above, a request has been made to hold sports and physical fitness programmes in private institutions and free trade zones.
