President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a Special Decree that prohibits clearing the surrounding area of the Wilpattu National Park and allocating land. The Decree comes into force with immediate effect and applicable to the districts of Mannar and Vavuniya.
The President ordered the Secretary, Ministry of Environment to take necessary steps regarding this matter immediately and informed all the State Officials of the area.
The President has instructed relevant authorities to strictly enforce the law with regard to deforestation, illegal land allocation and transfers in those areas.
