    Commonwealth values strengthened in Sri Lanka, says Commonwealth SG Featured

    Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma said he is happy to see an upsurge of Commonwealth values in Sri Lanka. He said that the new government in Sri Lanka has launched an ambitious programme to strengthen democratic practices and he assured the fullest cooperation from the Commonwealth for the government headed by President Maithipala Sirisena.

    Commonwealth Secretary General called on President Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

     

    During the meeting, Sharma had praised the present government’s 100-day programme, noting that it also comprised of many of the Commonwealth’s principles.

     

    President had expressed his hope that the Commonwealth would support measures that are taken in the country to expel misunderstandings, foster public trust and overcome post war challenges. He explained the government’s plans for reconciliation between communities, those who follow different faiths and between different political parties.

     

    President Sirisena assured fullest cooperation for implementation of the Commonwealth strategies adopted at the last CHOGM in Colombo as he is the Chair in Office of Commonwealth until the next summit scheduled to be held in Malta
