    Easter celebration, recognition of human ability to overcome the trials of life – President

    The celebration of Easter is a social recognition of the ability of humans to overcome the trials of life, through the path of salvation offered by Jesus Christ, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his Easter message.


    It shows the need for a commitment to face up to and overcome suffering through the spirit of love extending to all, helping to build the a good society high in spiritual strength, amidst the earthly obstacles faced in every aspect of life, the President added.

    The message further stated the world is thus reminded of the need to move towards realizing social justice, peace and reconciliation among all, enabled by Jesus Christ’s sacrifice of his own life for the salvation of all humanity.

    Following is the full text of the President’s Easter message:

    The Christians of Sri Lanka join followers of their faith the world over today to celebrate Easter, the greatest of Christian festivals.

    Easter brings to a joyous conclusion the repentant and self-sacrificial period of Lent, and especially the Holy Week, when Christians offer prayers and join in worship recalling the suffering, agony, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ followed by his triumphant resurrection.

    The importance of Easter is in its demonstration of the conquest of death, paving the way for Christians to crossover to eternal joy through observing the teachings of Jesus Christ.
