The President unveiled the plaque amidst the chanting of Pirith by the Maha Sangha led by Chief Incumbent of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara Ven.(Prof.) Bellanwila Wimalarathna Thera.
Thereafter the President accompanied by Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, inspected some of the stalls and went on a observation tour round the walk way, in a special vehicle, amidst cheers from the large crowds present.
The project has been formulated by the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLR&DC) based on a hydrological study carried out by JICA together with SLLR&DC for the preparation of a Master Plan to control flooding in Nugegoda, Rattanapitiya, Borelasgamuwa, Maha Ela and Ratmalana areas. Implementation of this project will mitigate frequent flooding in Weras Ganga Basin and also promote sustainable development activities and enhance environment improvement which will promote tourism industry in the relevant areas.
The Government within a short period of time has completed a number of similar initiatives such as the Nawala Canal, Diyatha Uyana Park, Nawala Wetland Park and Diyawanna Lake Development projects.
Maha Sangha including Ven.(Dr).Ittepane Dhammalankara Thero, Ven.(Prof.) Bellanwila Wimalarathna Thera. Ministers Susil Premajayantha, Prof.G.L.Peiris, Gamini Lokuge, Salinda Dissanayake, Western Province Governor Alevi Maulana, Deputy Minister Mohan Lal Grero, Western Province Chief Minister Upali Kodikara, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Chief of Presidential Staff Gamini Senarath were present at the occasion.
