The government had planned to purchase nine acres to establish a faculty of engineering sciences for the university.

Responding to a question raised by UNP Hambantota District MP Sajith Premadasa, the minister said that there were 91,446 internal and external students in the University of Kelaniya at presen. Of them 8,659 read for general degrees while 2,595 read for post graduate degrees and 80, 192 read for external degrees. The university comprised of six faculties and 558 teaching staff, he said.
