    Speedy actions to eradicate illicit liquor cause for rural poverty’ – Presiden

    President Maithripala Sirisena says he will take the necessary actions in the future to totally eradicate the illicit liquor, which is one of the main causes to increase the rural poverty.The President also said that he will issue a circular next week, making the relevant Police Officer-In-Charge & Senior Superintendent of Police responsible if illicit liquor is found from their police area.

    President Sirisena made these remarks addressing a ceremony organized to distribute benefits to the underprivileged people in the Polonnaruwa district under the “Pibidemu Polonnaruwa” district development programme held at the Polonnaruwa New Town, today (09).

    President Sirisena said that it is the responsibility of the people to reap the maximum level of benefits in an environment where the government has taken steps to implement programmes to free the people from poverty and uplift their economic standards. He also said that he will succeed in his fight against the illegal liquor that darkens the future of the children, a good family life, a good society and the country, during his tenure.

    Many programmes, including the presentation of Lakdaru Diriya scholarships to the school children, handing over of title deeds, distribution of equipment under the livelihood development programme, presentation of roofing sheets and other materials were  held under today’s event.

    MPs Mahinda Amaraweera, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Chief Minister Isura Devapriya, the Mayor of Polonnaruwa Chanaka Sidath Ranasinghe, District Secretary Panduka Abeywardena and others participated on this occasion.
