    President returns after successful tour to USA

    President Maithripala Sirisena returned to the country today (25th Sept.) after successfully concluding his visit to New York, USA where he attended the 72nd sessions of the UN General Assembly.

     

    This was the third time that President Maithripala Sirisena addressed the UN General Assembly. In his address to the UN the President apprised the world leaders regarding the policies of the country.

     

    The President who left for New York on 17th September arrived at the John F. Kennedy International Airport on 18th September.

     

    During his visit, the President participated at the Sessions of the UN Economic and Social Council on 18th September and the UN General Debate on 19th September.

     

    President Sirisena and First Lady Jayanthi Sirisena attended the luncheon hosted by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump and had cordial discussions.

     

    The President also held bilateral talks with Pakistan’s new Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Thomas A. Shannon and the Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

     

    The President also met with Prince Zeid al-Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The meeting between the UN Secretary General and President Maithripala Sirisena was held on 23rd September.

     

    On the same day, the President also met with the Sri Lankan community living in USA.
