    July 09, 2014

Deputy External Affairs Minister Neomal Perera told Parliament today (09) that Sri Lanka and Australia would work in accordance with the provisions of a bilateral agreement by the two nations with regard to Lankan illegal migrants.

Sri Lanka and Australia have strong relationship and mutual understanding of the problem of Lankan migrants trying to enter via boats. “We act jointly to find answers to this problem,” the Deputy Minister said.

He was responding to a series of questions raised by DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake who made special statement on the recent arrest of two boatloads of illegal migrants by Australian authorities.

Deputy Minister said that the Australian authorities have arrested two boatloads of Lankans in Australian waters at the end of last month. The identities of the persons who had been taken into custody have been established. Sri Lanka and Australian government are working very closely to find solutions to the problem of illegal migrants, he said.
