    President in special discussion to protect Perahera culture

    Special discussion on protecting the perahera (procession) culture in the Buddhists temple was held recently under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

    The discussion took place to address the controversial situation found with the shortage of tamed elephants.

     

    During the meeting the President advised the authorities to give priority for the Perahera culture, which come from ancient times and pointed out the importance of finding out solutions for this tamed elephants issue under long and short term plans.

     

    As a short term plan the attention was drawn to ascertain the possibility of using the tamed elephants in the custody of the Wildlife Department by court orders for the Perahera. As well, many long term plans were also discussed in detail at the meeting.

     

    In addition, the attention was also drawn regarding the tamed elephants using for industrial purposes to use for the Perahera.

     

    Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Secretary of the Ministry, S.P.B. Meegasmulla, the Diyawadana Nilame of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic were also present..
