    President recognizes the services of family health workers Featured

    President Maithripala Sirisena was the chief guest at a ceremony held to at the Temple Trees yesterday (May 09) to celebrate the International Day of the Midwife.

    More than 3,000 midwives participated in the ceremony, held under the theme "Women and Newborns: The Heart of Midwifery".


    The Family Health Service in Sri Lanka is described as the most expanded government service for the women in the country. The first midwife in Sri Lanka was registered in 1929. More than 10,000 midwives are working at the hospitals as well as in the field.


    During the function the President presented awards for the Midwives, who showed excellent performance in the field.


    Expressing his views on the occasion, Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that certain Trade Unions which had personal links with the previous administration were engaged in an effort to overthrow this Government. But, the Minister underscored that no room will be left to realize such motives.


    President of the Midwives Association Devika Kodithuwakku said the family health services officers are working tirelessly to safeguard the well-being of the families, especially women and children in the country.


    Deputy Minister Faizar Kasim, Secretary to the Ministry Anura Jayawickrema, and Director General of Health Services Dr. Palitha Mahipala were among those participated in this occasion.
