    Local Government polls in March next year – PM

    Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe assured that the forthcoming Local Government polls will not be postponed for any reason.

    Addressing the National Management Conference in Colombo recently, the Prime Minister confirmed that the Government is ready to hold the polls in March next year. The Prime Minister said they all decided that the Local Council polls should not be postpones. The local authorities require fresh members.

     

    Premier Wickremesinghe mentioned that the two major parties in the country, the UNP and SLFP, which formed the ruling national government will contest separately at the poll.

     

    The government in March extended the official term of 234 local government bodies, which was due to expire by the 31st of March, until the 15th of May. The terms of other remaining LG institutes were to expire in July or October.
