The establishment of a special statutory body to oversee the implementation of the proposals and recommendations made by the National Council was discussed at length at
the ''National Counci'' Hon. Namal Rajapaksa and Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka pointed out that the proposals and recommendations brought by the National Council should not be limited to a document and that they should be implemented followed-up accordingly. Therefore, they pointed out that a statutory body should be established or an existing body should be restructured.
The Prime Minister Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena agreeing with the said proposal made, stated that he will look into the possibility of establishing the said institution soon.
This was discussed at the National Council which met in Parliament on 24.11.2022 under the chairmanship of Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, Speaker and the participation of the Prime Minister Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena.
The National Council sub-committee on identifying short and medium-term programs related to National Policy chair Hon. Namal Rajapaksa, Member of Parliament presented the suggestions made regarding obtaining the support of the university vice-chancellors and university lecturers for formulating national policies and regarding the progress of discussions with them.
The National Council sub-committee on identifying short- and medium-term programs related to economic stabilization chair Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, Member of Parliament, presented the progress of discussions held on the banking, transport, tourism and business sectors to the National Council.
The Prime Minister Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena specifically mentioned that the fuel and energy crisis is a huge challenge to be faced in the coming years. Therefore, he pointed out that a necessary policy should be prepared to deal with it by paying attention to it. The Prime Minister further stated that the National Council should pay attention to the said. Additionally, the Speaker Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena emphasized on the importance of preparing a policy for the provincial councils and the central government to work together. He also pointed out that this need will be felt more after a provincial council election in the future.
Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, Chief Opposition Whip, Members of Parliament Hon. Johnston Fernando, Hon. Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Hon. Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi, Hon. Asanka Navaratne, Hon. A. L. M. Athaullah, Hon. Sagara Kariyawasam was present at the meeting held.
The Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake and the Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of the Parliament Mrs. Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera was also present.
