Minister Amaraweera has sent a letter (10) to the Director-General of the Central Environmental Authority, Hemantha Jayasinghe instructing him to submit an immediate environmental report on water discoloration in the Diyawanna Oya surrounding the Parliament area and the wetlands around Battaramulla three bridges area.
The Minister said that it is not yet clear whether the discoloration has occurred due to human excreta disposal or the development of any algae. Nonetheless, the Minister stated that the Government is expecting a scientific report on the matter as the water of the Diyawanna had not been polluted in this manner before.
Moreover, he added that the water discoloration level in the said areas has been increasing for the past few days and it is being investigated whether there is any contamination of the water and whether it could cause any harm to the aquatic animals.
