    April 06, 2021

The Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated that the government is conducting a detailed investigation into the presence of aflatoxins in coconut oil imported to Sri Lanka and action will be taken against if government officials are involved in the importation of coconut oil containing aflatoxins.

The Minister said this at the cabinet decision media briefing held today (06) at the Department of Government Information.

He said that the importation of coconut oil in this manner could have been carried out for a long period of time and the government has decided to look into this matter as it has come to the limelight now.

Commenting on the gazette notification issued to ban the importation of palm oil, the Minister said that the gazette notification would be altered in the future as the price of coconut oil in the local market could increase due to this gazette notification.

Moreover, Minister Rambukwella mentioned that the government expects to discuss with the officials of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution regarding the statement made by the Director General of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution and take necessary actions in that regard.

The Minister reiterated that an inquiry will be held in the future regarding the full statement made by the Director General of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.
