    Secretary Defence, Tri service Chiefs & acting IGP Agree to Share Facilities & Sports Professionalism among National & School Level Athletes

    A meeting, headed by Hon Namal Rajapaksa, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Sports yesterday (17) explored possibilities of sharing professional knowledge, facilities and equipment of Tri services and the Police for promotion of national and school level athletics as they have been at the forefront of Sri Lankan athletics and sports.

    The meeting with Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunarathna, Secretary of Defence, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, Navy Commander, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias, Air Force Commander, C.D Wikramarathna, acting Inspector General of Police and Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris, Director General, Civil Defence Force discussed how unparalleled professionalism in sports and athletics as well as discipline among tri services and the Police could be harnessed to develop all 25 Sports Training Schools in the country and empower budding athletes for national events. Hon Minister requested all service heads and the Police to extend their maximum support in this direction and endeavour to uplift athletics across the country.

    The maintenance of sports grounds, development of infrastructure in schools to offer better environment for sportsmen and women was also discussed extensively during the meeting. Hon Minister also elaborated on the importance of enhancement of such facilities in sports as an investment in the long run. Several executive committee members in the National Sports Council and officials of the Ministry were also associated with the discussion.
