President inspects Kalutara North Kalido beach development project

    March 10, 2020

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa inspected the Kalido beach development subsequent to attending another function.

Due to the 2017 floods the sand dunes in the estuary had got washed off leading to the Kalutara beach erosion. As a solution to this issue, sand was brought from the deep sea area and the estuary area was being restored. The project is carried out in three stages. The first stage being the construction of an artificial beach stretch spanning two km long and 25 metres wide. Three hundred thousand cubes of sand was used for this project.

So far a stretch of 500 metres has been completed. The project engineer Sujeewa Ranawaka told the President that within the next two weeks the first phase could be completed.

The second stage will be a kilometre stretch in Angulana and the third stage is a 500 metre stretch in Mount Lavinia. Sujeewa Ranawaka said that by April 20th the work on all three stages could be completed.

The President also focussed attention on the road cleaning in the Moratuwa and  Panadura areas on his way to Kalutara. The President had immediately notified the local government representatives and the police over the unsatisfactory cleaning programmes in the area.

The president ordered an investigation on why the town cleaning activities are not done in a streamlined manner and warned the authorities to ensure that the cleanliness activities are done methodically.
