Mechanism to control coconut prices – Strict action against middlemen who create artificial shortage of essential items

    March 06, 2020

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued directives to implement a proper mechanism to control the rising price of coconuts.

Accordingly, it has been decided to provide coconuts to the public at concessionary prices through the Kurunegala Plantation Company, Chilaw plantation Company,  the Coconut Cultivation Board and Sathosa. The Prime Minister has also instructed the temporary removal of the import limits for turmeric and Urad Dhal.

The Prime Minister said this during the essential commodity pricing review meeting held at Temple Trees.

Tin fish, chicken and egg prices were also reviewed and it was decided to remove the controlled price for locally produced milk powder in order to allow a fair competition.

Attention was also focussed on controlling vegetable prices through the economic centres and Sathosa outlets and stern action would be taken against middlemen who create artificial shortages in order to increase prices of essential commodities and burden the public.
