    Rs.300 mn SME loan facility extended to tourism sector Featured

    Industrial Export, Investment Promotion and Civil Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said yesterday the government has extended the Rs.300 million SME loan facility for the entrepreneurs in the tourism sector as well.He said the tourism industry had totally collapsed during the Yahapalana regime.

    The main reason for this collapse is the former government’s failure to implement proper strategies and campaigns for tourism development.“The Easter Sunday teerror attacks caused a major setback to the entire industry which was an utter failure of the former regime. Most of the hotels were forfeited due to the failure to paying back loans. It has also been reported that several buses used for the transport of tourists were seized by the leasing companies.

    Entrepreneurs in the tourism sector made an appeal to us to provide give them some relief to revive their business. That is why we decided to extended the Rs.300 million SME loan facility for them as well, “ the Minster said.Meanwhile, the government has also decided to provide a grace period for the owners of buses used for the transport of tourists to settle their installments of lease payment.
