    NBRO alert over hazy smog over Colombo

    Scientists at National Building Research Organization (NBRO) yesterday expressed their concern about the clouds of fine dust that swept through the capital on Wednesday stating they are staying on the alert about it. A senior scientist of the Environmental Division of NBRO, Sarath Premasiri said, although it seems now that these dust clouds have dissipated, the dust storms are increasingly becoming a common meteorological phenomenon in the Asian region.

    “India , China and Bangladesh face dust storms that are hazardous to human health. These storms sometimes last for days. The problem recently swept to Dubai,” he explained.“The wind carrying dust particles came from North.We do not know yet whether any pollutants and bacteria blew with it has harmed any individuals. However, we are on the alert and NBRO has started collecting data from hospitals to get an idea about it,” he said.

    “There have been no such records yet,” he said.Asked about the chances of the clouds revisiting the capital once again, Premasiri said according to weather experts the wind had taken a different direction.We asked the Meteorology Department how and where these sandstorms originated. A Met Department Duty Weather Forecaster on duty said the winds experienced on Wednesday came from abroad, from India as a result of cyclonic Bengal winds.The winds are now turning from Southwest to Northwest which could mean there are no storms directed towards Sri Lanka, said the
