    The Venerable Mahanayake Theras of the three Sects and members of the Maha Sangha yesterday requested the public to desist from violence and engage in day to day activities while maintaining peace and unity.The Mahanayake Theras issuing a special statement said it was unfortunate to see ethnic and religious tensions rising following the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks. “This is not a time to fight but to sustain unity when the country is facing a terrorist threat. All Sri Lankans should work as one to nullify this threat and take the country forward”

    A statement signed by Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter Most. Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera, Mahanayake of Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera, Mahanayake of Ramanna Nikaya Most. Ven Napane Pemasiri Thera and Mahanayake of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya Most. Ven Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera said.The Mahanayake Theras went on to say that since ancient times the Buddhists had co-existed not only with Muslims but all others following various religious faiths.

    “But some recent violent acts show these friendly ties have taken a blow following the Easter Sunday attacks. It is time to restore these ties for the wellbeing of the country and its people”.The Maha Sangha also noted that political representatives from both government and opposition were duty bound to work in a manner which ensures unity and harmony among ethnic and religious groups. The Maha Sangha said issues have arisen due to some politicians trying to seek political mileage using the current situation and urged to desist from such acts which could be detrimental to the country.

    It is imperative to give necessary support to the Security Forces and the Police to maintain law and order, the Mahanayake Theras said.The Mahanayake Theras further said it was important to establish a peaceful atmosphere in the country soon for the people to celebrate Vesak in unity.
