    Committee appointed to inquire into the train accident

    A special committee has been appointed to look into the train accident in Panaliya, Polgahawela, Sri Lanka Railways Additional General Manager (Operations) Wijaya Samarasinghe said.The official said a three-member committee has been appointed by the General Manager of the Railways S.M. Abeywickrama to conduct the preliminary investigations into the accident.

    The Committee has commenced the investigations and is recording evidence, currently, he saidThe Committee is tasked to ascertain the reasons for the accident and recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future as well as to produce a report on estimated damages.

    At least 32 passengers were injured and hospitalized after two trains plying on the same track collided at the Panaliya area in Polgahawela Monday evening (6).The accident had occurred when the Colombo to Kandy express train, which was stalled on the tracks near Panaliya station in between Rambukkana and Polgahawela stations due to a signal failure, was hit from behind by a power set plying on the same track.

    The injured have been admitted to the Polgahawela hospital and five people with serious injuries have been transferred to Kurunegala Hospital.The accident disrupted the train services on the upcountry line and several trains including the night mail train to Badulla last night was cancelled.Local media reported that the driver the assistant driver, the head guard and the under guard of the power set that rammed into the express train have been suspend
