With a view to creating a vibrant and modern electronic media environment, the Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development has been established and it also serves as a media consultancy institute for the member countries.
The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation has the full membership of the institute since the year 1982 and derives the benefit of its technological and training opportunities.
As such, the proposal made by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Finance and Mass Media, to conduct the 17th General Conference of this Institute in Sri Lanka in August, 2018 and for the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation to host the Conference, was approved by the Cabinet.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
News.lk publishes in three languages – Sinhala, Tamil and English.
