    More than 2, 000 women to be elected to local councils

    Indicating a huge number of women’s participation in politics, more than 2, 000 women representatives will be elected to the LG bodies under the newly introduced mix electoral system, according to the gazette notification published recently.

     

    Since at least 25 percent women have to represent in the local councils under present system, this number was increased to this level from 82 women who were elected under the previous Proportional Representative (PR) system.

     

    According to the gazette notification giving the number of members to each local council 8,356 members will be elected to 341 local councils, a sharp increase of 4, 486 from the number of members return the councils in the last election. Of them, 3,840 members will be elected under the first-past-post system while rest will be elected under the PR System.
