There are about six million users of social media in Sri Lanka and it should be used to communicate the development news of the country, Deputy Minister of Vocational Training and Skills Development Karunaranaratna Paranavitana said.
At a workshop held at the Department of Government Information yesterday (16th Oct.) he said a special unit on social media should be opened under the Ministry of Mass Media.
The Acting DG of Department of Government Information and Chairman of SLBC Attorney at Law Sudarshana Gunawardena said that he was able to use social media at SLBC and within three months they were able to make a vast change at the SLBC and as a result SLBC was able to increase the number of listeners by a great number.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
News.lk publishes in three languages – Sinhala, Tamil and English.
