Over 6, 000 migrant workers left for S. Korea last year

    August 14, 2017

The highest number of migrant workers to South Korea was reported in 2016 amounting to 6,635, said Minister of Foreign Employment Thalatha Athukorala.

She said that there is a good job market for Sri Lankans in South Korea and people going for jobs should identify their responsibilities and return to Sri Lanka at the end of their contract.

Minister Athukorala said that in the year 2015,  about  5,006 workers left for jobs while in 2016 it was 6, 635. Already in 2017, about 2, 134 people have left for jobs in South Korea.

The minister wanted people who are living in Korea illegally to take the opportunity of the amnesty and return to Sri Lanka.

She said that in Israel too there is a good opportunity for Sri Lankan laborers but the responsibility of protecting the jobs lies in the hands of people who go to work in Israel. Already 61 laborers are in Israel illegally and this has caused a threat to getting jobs from that country, she added.
