This had been revealed by the Qatar Labour and Social Services Minister Abdulla Saliya Al Khulaifi at a discussion with Foreign Employment Minister Thalatha Athukorala during her recent visit to West Asia, the ministry said.
According to Minister Al Khulaifi, the decision to pay salaries through banks was taken to ensure that the salaries were safe and secure.and this would bring solutions to all salary related issues of migrant workers.
Minister Athukorala thanking the Qatar Labour Minister said the ties between Sri Lanka and Qatar would be strengthened further when talks were held in December between the two countries. Athukorala promised the Qatar Labour Minister that the government of Sri Lanka would take appropriate action against those who continued to overstay visas in Qatar.
According to her, though there were around 145,000 Sri Lankans in Qatar, only around 107,000 had been registered with the Sri Lankan Embassy in that country.
