Mosquito Control Week ends; Legal action against 2,877 mosquito breeders

    September 18, 2015

Legal action will be taken against 2,877 persons who were the owners of lands detected with mosquito breeding places during the National Mosquito Control Week held from September 10 to 16, Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry said.

According to the sources, during the past seven days, 567,399 premises had been inspected by special teams and had found 16,286 premises which had mosquito larvae. Accordingly legal action will be taken against the owners of 2,877 premises. Notices had been issued for 20,609 premises. The inspectors had corrected 82,152 premises.

According to the Epidemiology Unit 20,509 suspect dengue cases have been reported from all over the island, during the first nine months of this year. Approximately 50.77% of dengue cases had been reported from Western Province and the highest number was during the fourth week of 2015.

Therefore the situation warrants regular removal of possible mosquito breeding sites from the environment, Epidemiology Unit emphasised.
