Fishermen issue should be resolved diplomatically - Fisheries Minister

    September 12, 2015

“Though the Indian fishermen were used to take fisheries resources in Sri Lankan Waters for about 50-60 yrs, this matter was subjected to argument recently", the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera said after assuming duties at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development recently.

"This is an issue which should be solved in diplomatic level and we had several discussions with the Indian High Commissioner in this regard. They show responsive entry and it is good start. We are pleased for the cooperation rendered to us by the Indian central government and High Commission of India. We look forward to solve this problem without damage to bilateral cooperation between both countries”, he said.

The Minister further stated that, fishermen of Chennai State are largely poaching in Sri Lanka Waters and the protests were staged there against arresting Indian fishermen. However we are dealing with the Indian Central Government.

Former Secretary, Nimal Hettiarachchi and a large number of guests were present on the occasion.
