According to Minister of Agriculture Duminda Dissanayake, the ministry is planning to promote pepper, turmeric and ginger cultivation to strengthen the country's economy and safeguard farmers. The Ministry is considers that it is important to make farmers aware about modern agricultural practices that can be used to develop pepper, turmeric and ginger as there is a demand for these crops in the local and international markets.
Accordingly, an awareness campaign will be conducted through the Export Agriculture Department. The Agriculture Ministry will provide organic fertiliser, material and advice to 10,000 farmer families in the Anuradhapura district to cultivate high quality traditional paddy varieties.
This course of action was revealed by the Minister during a meeting with farmers from 800 farmer organisations in the Anuradhapura district.
