Building houses for estate workers begins from Meeriyabedda

    June 16, 2015

The Ministry of Plantation Industries is in the process of facilitating the smooth implementation of a mega housing project intended for the estate workers. The Cabinet has approved the project aimed at building 25,000 houses for estate worker families especially of the upcountry.

According to Minister Lashman Kiriella the Indian government has promised to assist the government in carrying out the project. Kiriella said the government has come up with the project in appreciation of what the estate worker community has done for the promotion of the country's plantation industry for the past 200 years.

The government hopes to provide each estate worker with a house built on a seven-perch-plot of land, the minister said.

The first phase of the housing scheme has commenced at Meeriyabedda, Bandarawela, where a recent landslide claimed the lives and properties of estate workers of the Koslanda area.
