The Project for the Protection of Mangroves is being launched to further maintain Sri Lanka's position as the first State to comprehensively protect mangrove eco systems.
It was revealed at a news conference that 3.4 million US Dollars will be spent on this Project. It will be handled with the support of Non-Governmental Organizations under the supervision of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment.
It is intended to re-cultivate mangroves on an extent of 9600 acres. A Mangroves Museum is also being planned. It is anticipated that the protection of mangroves will benefit vastly from the services mooted over the next five years.
