The Ministry of Social Services revealed that already three Reading Centers have been commenced to inculcate the reading habits in children of the remote areas under the Government's 100 day programme.

The researches conducted so far have revealed a gradual set back in the thinking power of Sri Lankan children. As a result, a young generation has already been born with no respect at all to ethical values, religious doctrines and lack of understanding to reason what is good and what is bad and thus going astray and falling victim to vicious forces.

A survey in this respect was conducted by the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare. Under this programme, a two days training is given to 10 leaders who can work voluntarily in a selected Grama Niladhari Division in difficult Divisional Secretariat areas in the country and provided with a set of books worth Rs. 50,000/- and a steel almyrah.

The special feature of this is the methodology of overseeing whether the reader taking away the book is actually reading with understanding.
