Sri Lanka police seize 26 tractors used to smuggle drugs

    February 17, 2015

Sri Lanka Police Narcotics Bureau has taken into custody 26 tractors in a warehouse in Sinharamulla, Kelaniya believed to have been used to smuggle in heroin from Pakistan by a drug smuggling suspect who is in custody now.

Police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said the tractors were seized on suspicion that they were being used to transport heroin by drug smuggling suspect Samantha Kumara alias Wele Suda who has revealed the details about the tractors.

The tractors found in the warehouse had their gear boxes removed and it is believed that stocks of heroin of at least 20 kilograms of weight must have been stored in the gear boxes of the tractors which were imported from Pakistan

It has been alleged that Wele Suda had sent drugs to the warehouse address, while he was overseas.

According to preliminary investigations carried out by the police, the warehouse is owned by a British national and had been taken on rent by the alleged drug smugglers. Two Pakistani nationals have reportedly served as watchers of the warehouse.

Pakistani officials arrested Wele Suda in Peshawar and extradited to Sri Lanka last month. He has amassed a massive wealth from drug trafficking and fled the country with his wife last year when police moved on him.
