Allocation for education to reach 6 pct of GDP

    January 27, 2015

Minister of Education  Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the amount allocated in the budget for Education Sector is inadequate and as such measures will be taken to increase the Budgetary allocation for education gradually to reach 6 percent of the GDP.

The Minister revealed this at a press briefing held at the Education Ministry on Monday (26).

He said that he has received complaints to the effect that illegal monetary transactions had taken place in the past for Grade One admissions on the guise of charging a fee for renovation of classrooms.

Therefore, immediate action will be taken to issue a new circular streamlining Grade One admissions, the Minister further emphasised.

The new circular which lays down clear criteria will streamline the current process of Grade One admissions and eliminate the chances for bribes, he added.  Meanwhile measures will be taken to allocate funds to meet school expenses from the interim budget that will be presented in Parliament on Jan.29, he said.

Also, the Minister reiterated that the Ministry will not hesitate to take stringent action against errant school officials who ignore the circular.
