“Thai Pongal, which is celebrated in many countries of the world is a festival that highlights the core values of their culture and civilization.
“The celebration is said to have commenced around 1,000 years ago during the regime of Chola. It is a sacred day when gratitude is expressed during the first harvest season of the year. The aim of the celebration is to express gratitude to everyone for a good harvest. Not only gods but also animals such as cows are shown gratitude’.
“As such, it is a day for Hindus in Sri Lanka who march towards development in the golden rays of the sun, to join in celebration with those of their faith worldwide.
"There is a new political culture in the country with equity and justice. We all have to be determined to create a better society.”
