    December 30, 2014

The government through it’s program to enable fishermen to procure a reasonable income for their harvest has taken steps to ensure a certified price, through which the CFC will purchase a kilo of Tuna from the fishermen at a certified price of Rs.700/-.

On the instructions given by the President as the Minister for Fisheries, the Deputy Minister Sarath Kumara Gunarathne  purchased the first lot of Tuna  fish for the Fisheries Corporation from the fishermen at the Dikowita Fisheries Harbour, recently.  This program will be extended by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources  to all parts of the island.

The Deputy Minister has also arranged for the purchase of seven varieties of popular fish including Tuna at a certified price.  The fish thus purchased from the fishermen will be sold to the consumers through the Fisheries Corporation.

"We have taken these steps on the instructions of our  President  for the benefit of the fishermen who face difficulties with the proposed very unreasonable embargoes that the European Union wants to impose on our country.Russia is also prepared to purchase Tuna and other fish varieties from our country", " Deputy Fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunarathne said.

The market will now be planned with care through the Fisheries Corporation to cause no hardships to our fishermen.  The certified price for fish will prevail throughout the country benefiting both the fisher-folk as well as the consumers. (NJ/KH)
