    Stocking of fingerlings in Tanks to empower rural communities

    As a measure to empower the rural communities in Sri Lanka the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry has launched a project to develop aquaculture in inland reservoirs to produce employment opportunities and new income avenues.

    Under the accelerated program to uplift the inland fisheries industry, the stocking of fish fingerlings in the Lunugamvehera Tank took place Monday (25) under the patronage of State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi.

    While the total number of fingerlings to be stocked in the Lunugamvehera Tank was 300,000, as the first step, the State Minister yesterday stocked 60,000 fingerlings of edible fish catla, Rohu and carp.With the involvement of the National Aquaculture Development Authority, a special program has been implemented on the instructions of the Minister of State Dilip Wedaarachchi to uplift the fishery industry in the reservoirs inside the country.

    The initiative will help to meet the demand of fish for the people inside the country and the people will also have the opportunity to purchase good quality fresh fish.According to the Ministry 168 people are engaged in the fishery industry affiliated with the Lunugamvehera reservoir. The stocking of fish in the reservoir was carried out with the aim to uplift the livelihood of these people and for them to obtain a good fish harvest. National Aquaculture Development Authority Chairman Nuwan Prasantha Madawan Arachchi also participated in the event.
