The foundation stone was jointly laid by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Housing and Construction Minister Sajith Premadasa and Acting Indian High Commissioner Arindam Bagchi in the presence of Land and Parliamentary Reforms Minister Gayantha Karunathilake, Primary Industries Minister Daya Gamage and Social Empowerment Minister P. Harrison and with the blessings of the Maha Sangha.
Several Members of Parliament, senior government officials, Board members of Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera Commemoration Foundation and a large number of the public also participated. The village will be developed using a grant of Sri Lankan Rs. 300 million from the Indian Government.
The project envisages the construction of 153 new houses, a multipurpose community building and hall, internal water supply system and the renovation of monks’ quarters and library. The project is a part of India’s development cooperation with Sri Lanka.The Housing and Construction Ministry is the implementing partner from the Sri Lankan government for this project.
In addition to the above project, two other projects to construct model villages in each district and model villages in Southern Province of Sri Lanka comprising a total of 1,200 houses in collaboration with the Housing and Construction Ministry are also in progress
