Accelerated program to deepen the tanks

    August 23, 2017

The irrigational tanks have not been rehabilitated for over 69 years and this has caused great harm to the agriculture sector, said Irrigation and Water Resource Management State Minister Palitha Range Bandara.

He said to change this situation deepening the tanks and finding alternatives to collect the rain water in land areas is a must.

He made these comments after an inspection tour to see the rehabilitation of tanks in the Puttalam District.

The minister further said that upto now water of Daduru Oya, Kala Oya and Mee oya have not been diverted to agricultural lands. The water of these rivers is just flowing to the sea while the farmers don’t have water for cultivation. It is time that we at least now save every drop of water that fall from the sky and use it for agriculture.

The minister said that considering this situation an accelerated program to deepen the tanks has been started with the Irrigation Department, farmer organizations and the private sector.
