Houses built for victims of the Meeriyabedda landslide are to be handed over before 'Deepavali" in October this year. According to army media sources 75 houses built in Makaladeniya, close to Diyaluma are to be given to the beneficiaries.

The devastating landslide which happened in October 2014 claimed several lives and displaced many families. Soon after the incident the army was entrusted with the task of constructing new houses in close coordination with the relevant authorities. Houses are built in state land provided by the government.

Construction work on the 75 house project began on 1st of May 2015 by the Army Engineers and the Corps of Engineering Services. Raw materials were provided by relevant state entities while the work is supervised by the Disaster Management Centre and respective Ministries.

A progress meeting was held at the site recently with the participation of Ministers, military officers and state authorities. The provision of basic amenities such as electricity and water and the construction of an electric fence to ward of possible wild elephant intrusions was also taken up for discussion during the meeting.
