The Moragahakanda - Kaluganga project was inaugurated by the President Maithripala Sirisena as the then Minister of Agriculture in 2007.
The entire project implemented with an investment of USD 1,300 million will add an additional 25Mw to the national grid.
The construction work of the Moragahakanda reservoir has now been completed up to nearly 70% and will be concluded by this December. The Kaluganga project is expected to be completed by 2018.
According to the Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment Anuradha Jayarathne, 3,162 families who were displaced due to the development project are now being resettled in suitable alternative lands with all the facilities and the infrastructure facilities.
