The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development has conducted an investigation regarding the damages and losses incurred by the fisher community and the fisheries industry due to the extreme weather conditions of flood and storm recently prevailed in Sri Lanka.
The fisheries officers in respective districts have reported that the fisher community has been severely affected by the storm "Ronu".
According to a report prepared by the Ministry, 562 fishers have been affected in the districts of Mannar, Kilinochchi, Kalmunai, Jaffna and Puttalam and the loss incurred amounted to Rs. 96,843,700.
In Mannar, 247 fishers have been affected and the estimated loss is Rs. 37,437,750. In total 67 fishing vessels, 4 engines, and 1387 nets have been damaged in Mannar.
In Kilinochchi 150 fishers were affected while 47 vessels, 13 boats with no engines and 125 nets have been damaged with losses amounting to Rs. 49,565,000.
Three fishers have been affected in Kalmunai incurring a damage of Rs. 235,000 with damages to 2 vessels and one net.
In Jaffna, 114 fishers has been affected by the storm and they incurred losses of Rs. 8,400,950 with damages to one boat and nets of 40 fishers.
Also in Puttalam district 21 fishers have been affected with damages to 4 engine vessels and 8 small scale fishing vessels resulting in losses of Rs. 1,205,000.
